Every valid hand in 13-card rummy needs at least one pure sequence, with no joker. An ace can be part of it, like any other card, but it doesn’t have to be.

Can you make a set of aces?
Yes. A set is three or four cards of the same rank in different suits:
- A♣ A♦ A♥ is a valid set.
- A♣ A♥ Joker is a valid impure set; the joker stands in for a third ace.
- A♣ A♣ A♥ is not valid. With two decks you can hold two A♣ cards, but a set can’t repeat a suit.
How many points is an ace worth?
In Indian rummy, an ace left unmatched when someone declares counts as 10 points, the same as a king, queen or jack. Numbered cards count their face value, and jokers count zero. In Points Rummy, the most you can lose in one hand is 80 points.

Is the ace a flexible card?

An ace has the same number of options as a 2 or a king, and fewer than any middle card. But it costs 10 points if it’s left in your hand, compared with 2 points for a 2. That’s why, if an ace isn’t close to a meld, it’s usually one of the first cards to discard.
Practical tips for playing the ace
- Keep it if you hold the 2 and 3 or the K and Q of the same suit, or another ace for a set.
- Discard it early if it’s isolated. A lone ace has few ways to be used and a high point cost.
